(Washington) – Ambassador Eric Edelman has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as a member of the bipartisan board of directors for the United States Institute of Peace, USIP announced today.

"The Institute will benefit greatly from having such an experienced foreign policy official on the Board," said USIP President Richard Solomon. "Ambassador Edelman's experience with the State Department, Department of Defense, and the White House will assist in enhancing USIP’s unique bridging ability across the U.S. government."

Ambassador Edelman is currently distinguished fellow at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, a visiting scholar at the Philip Merrill Center for Strategic Studies at the Johns Hopkins University and a senior associate of the International Security Program at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University. He previously served as U.S. ambassador to Finland (1998-2001) and to Turkey (2003-2005).

Filling the vacancy of departing member Dr. Chester Crocker, Ambassador Edelman will serve until 2015. The Board of Directors, appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, actively oversees the activities of the United States Institute of Peace, setting long-term goals and priorities for the Institute.
