(Washington) – The United States Senate confirmed Stephen Hadley’s appointment for a second term to the board of directors of the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) yesterday. Hadley, former national security advisor for President George W. Bush, currently serves as senior advisor for international affairs at USIP.

“Stephen Hadley has been a dedicated supporter of the Institute’s mission and work. I value his experience and am very pleased to welcome him back to our board of directors, where he will continue to shape the future of USIP,” commented USIP President Jim Marshall.

Hadley has served as a senior advisor at the Institute since 2009. In that capacity he has helped lead high-level working groups on the Middle East and Afghanistan. He also co-chaired the Quadrennial Defense Review Independent Panel with William Perry, which USIP facilitated.

By law, no more than eight of the Institute’s 15 member board of directors can be members of one political party. The board includes the secretaries of State and Defense, the president of the National Defense University, and 12 additional members appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. It actively oversees the activities of the Institute—setting long-term goals and priorities for USIP’s programs as well as monitoring the Institute's financial, administrative, and personnel policies.
