On May 8, 2014, the Institute hosted the Second Annual Sheikha Fatima Lectureship on “Women Leading for Peace” at USIP headquarters in Washington D.C., which featured three distinguished female leaders who examined how women’s leadership and skills enhance peacebuilding globally.

In recognition of women as peacebuilders, the United States Institute of Peace established the Sheikha Fatima Lectureship series around Women at the Table, with the second annual lecture focusing on “Women Leading for Peace.” This year’s lectureship showcased what it means to be a leader in diplomacy, civil society and media, and offered examples of exemplary leadership in the field of women, peace and security.

It was through the generosity of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Al Ketbi, the wife of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founder and first president of the United Arab Emirates, that the Institute of Peace named the north atrium of the headquarters building the “International Women’s Commons” in recognition of efforts to advance the progress of women as peacemakers.

The event featured:

  • Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne
Peer, House of Lords, United Kingdom Parliament
  • Ambassador Melanne Verveer
Executive Director, Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security
  • Ms. Jill Dougherty, Moderator

How to Support Female Entrepreneurs in Afghanistan

How to Support Female Entrepreneurs in Afghanistan

Potential areas of cooperation between the Taliban and the international community, such as private sector development and alternative livelihoods to now-banned opium poppy cultivation, will be on the agenda at a meeting of international envoys for Afghanistan hosted by the United Nations in Doha from June 30 to July 1. Discussions on women’s rights are not included, as the Taliban consider it an internal matter. This is ironic, given that the private sector is one area where the Taliban allow limited women’s participation.
