Anticipatory Governance
Upgrading Government for the 21st Century
There is a great need for civil society and government agencies to work together, using 21st century management tools, to anticipate threats, extend warning time and learn rapidly from past experience. Please join us for a discussion on these topics with Leon Fuerth, former national security advisor to Vice President Al Gore, and Ambassador Tom Pickering, former Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs.

“If we are to remain a well-functioning republic and a prosperous nation, we must get ahead of events or we risk being overtaken by them.” – Leon Fuerth
Time and time again, the international community is surprised by how quickly events transform situations around the world. Events like the Arab Spring and electoral violence in Kenya caught many by surprise, even though the peacebuilding community predicted that they would happen. Often when we face changes, the institutions that can help with these transitions have been reacting to events rather than anticipating and preparing for them. It is essential that civil society and government agencies work together, using 21st century management tools, to anticipate threats, extend warning time and learn rapidly from past experience.
