Building Kosovo's Euro-Atlantic Future

Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci discussed his government's views on Kosovo's current status, its relationships with its most important neighbors and partners, and its future.
 

Following the victory of the Democratic Party of Kosovo in the parliamentary elections on November 17, 2007, Hashim Thaçi became the first prime minister of the Republic of Kosovo on January 9, 2008.  One of Prime Minister Thaçi’s first major actions was to declare Kosovo as an independent, sovereign and democratic state on February 17, 2008.   

Prime Minister Thaçi discussed his government's views on Kosovo's current status, its relationships with its most important neighbors and partners, and its future.

Relying in large part on primary empirical evidence, this report explores the dynamics of violent extremism in Kosovo and the disproportionately high number of radicalized fighters from the region in Syria and Iraq. Examining the historic, cultural, geopolitical, and socioeconomic factors behind the phenomenon, it focuses on the flow as a symptom of a larger religious militancy problem within the country and offers recommendations on countering that challenge.
