The Center of Innovation for Science, Technology, and Peacebuilding partnered with National Academies of Science and of Engineering to launch a major, multi-year initiative, organized as a Roundtable. The roundtable will provide a forum for multiple stakeholders (government, industry, academia, NGOs) to:

  • Discuss important issues related to the development and application of technology and methods from engineering and science in the service of conflict prevention, peacemaking, and peacekeeping; and
  • Explore opportunities for stakeholder collaboration and action on issues of mutual interest.

An initial planning meeting co-organized by the National Academies and USIP was held on March 12, 2009 to clarify the scope of the proposed roundtable’s activities. An extraordinary group of luminaries from both science and peacebuilding attended and responded favorably to the prospect of establishing a formal USIP/NAE Roundtable on Technology, Science, and Peacebuilding.

To be more effective, development programs need more in-depth analysis of their reconstruction efforts, even in the most insecure spaces.
