This planning workshop was conducted to elicit information from the Roundtable membership about the opportunities for and challenges to peacebuilding around the world.  It used a structured problem-solving approach to help organize discussions, identify common interests, and consider ways in which technology, science, and engineering may play a role in advancing the cause of peace.  Following the workshop, staff created a draft strategic plan for the Roundtable's inaugural meeting, held on May 17, 2011.

The workshop gave staff of the Roundtable members a chance to dialog with USIP country experts for Iraq, Afghanistan, Haiti, and Sudan.  These countries were chosen to illustrate the many common as well as unique challenges faced in zones of conflict and unstable states.  These discussion served as a springboard to an afternoon plenary, when attendees worked to identify themes, consider emerging priorities for action, and discuss how the Roundtable mechanism might best be leveraged to bring technology, science, and engineering productively to bear.

To be more effective, development programs need more in-depth analysis of their reconstruction efforts, even in the most insecure spaces.
