2009

  • Through collaboration with the local Provincial Reconstruction Team, USIP helps the Diyala Provincial Council develop a vision and plans to stabilize the province. 
  • Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki speaks at a public event at USIP. In an hour-long session, he discusses the various social and political improvements in Iraq over the last several years, the impact of the global financial crisis on Iraq’s oil-dependent economy, the need to resolve tensions between Kurds and Iraqis and the need to build up Iraq’s security sector.
  • With more than 4 million Iraqis displaced from their homes, USIP organizes two high-profile conferences on property claims in Iraq and the measures needed to address them. USIP also partners with an Iraqi civil society organization to produce a guide for Iraqi Ministry of Displacement and Migration officials outlining the benefits and services the ministry is required to provide to displaced persons.
