How (and Why) to Use USIP’s Free Online Micro-Courses With High School Students
Webinar for Educators
We know that many U.S. schools this spring will continue remote learning to some degree, and USIP remains committed to providing schools with meaningful and engaging virtual educational resources. In this webinar for educators, participants received an introduction to USIP’s catalog of Global Campus online micro-courses, diving deeply into one course to see how it works. The micro-courses cover a wide variety of topics that are at the heart of teaching about international conflict and peace – from a basic introduction to peacebuilding to courses on skills like conflict analysis and negotiation, and issues like nonviolent action, religion, gender, and media and the arts. Each course includes case studies and stories of peacebuilders from around the world – helping build empathy alongside encouraging critical thinking and analysis. They are self-paced and take approximately three hours each to complete.
Current USIP Peace Teacher Emily Philpott, a high school teacher at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Ridgeland, MS, joined the webinar to share how she has used these courses both in-person and virtually with students, offering strategies and concrete lesson ideas, and reflecting on student impact.
