In 2014, USIP's grant making on sub-Saharan Africa will focus on strengthening peace education at African universities. In addition to training the next generation of policymakers, sub-Saharan African universities often serve as important pillars of peace in the communities where they are located. Many universities, however, struggle to provide quality education as growing student populations stretch available resources.

USIP will make two or three grants to sub-Saharan African universities for these universities to strengthen their peace studies or conflict resolution programs. Activities eligible for funding will include experiential learning programs for students, exchange programs, partnerships between universities, establishing opportunities for student research, improving the quality of instruction, and attracting and retaining high-quality staff. USIP will not fund construction projects or faculty research. To accompany the grants, USIP will provide the grantees access to its online courses as well as a set of USIP’s relevant books. These grants will be made through an open two-step application process. Applicants will first submit concept notes, and a then a select number of applicants will be invited to submit full grant proposals, which will be adjudicated through the standard procedure.

USIP is currently accepting concept notes for this grant competition. Concept notes will only be accepted from legally registered universities in sub-Saharan Africa. Concept notes are due by 5:00pm Eastern Standard Time May 26, 2014. Concept notes must be submitted using our online form.

The official "Call for Concept Notes" guidelines can be found by clicking on the orange "Download PDF" box on the side of this webpage. Please download and review the PDF prior to submitting a concept note.
