(Washington) – Next Wednesday, May 6, a group of senior experts with decades of public service will present its final report on our nation’s strategic posture, to include its nuclear weapons strategy, to the President and Congress. They will detail their findings and respond to media questions in a press conference.
In the spring of 2008, Congress asked the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) to facilitate the bipartisan, Congressionally-appointed Congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States. The Commission is chaired by former Secretary of Defense William Perry; the Vice-Chair is James Schlesinger, also a former Secretary of Defense and the first Secretary of Energy.
The Commission provided Congress an Interim Report on its progress on December 15, 2008, available online at www.usip.org/strategic_posture/interim.html.
After the news event at USIP, the Commission will be testifying first before the full House Armed Services Committee, then the next day before the full Senate Armed Services Committee.
