(Washington) – The U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) is pleased to announce that Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Johnnie Carson will present the keynote address at "The Birth of the Republic of South Sudan," an event hosted by the USIP on Thursday, July 14, to mark the new nation’s independence. 

Ambassador Carson's remarks, titled "U.S. Engagement with the Republic of South Sudan," will lay out U.S. policy initiatives for the new country. Remarks will be followed by questions and answers, moderated by David Smock, USIP vice president.
