Alaska

Brendan GerdtsBrendan Gerdts | Bartlett High School | Anchorage, Alaska

Coordinator: Simona Gerdts

I have been blessed to spend the past four years of my life living in the beautiful state of Alaska. Although my father's commitment to the United States Air Force will soon take my family to a new destination, Alaska will always hold a special place in my heart! The essence of my core is my extreme patriotism. My patriotism is not just for America, but for the idea of a more united people. My wish is for the world to give up its political boundaries and become a single state. This wish may seem far-fetched, I know, but many of the things we now call normal were far-fetched wishes long ago. While this wish will probably not happen in my lifetime, or ever, it is still my wish and no one will ever change that! The wish for a more unified people will always be mine; one in a million, lost to the tides of history.

Her diligent and determined nature has helped her excel academically, but what defines Andrea is her compassionate character. Although she enjoys reading and painting, Andrea's gaiety stems from helping those around her. Once in college, she will major in Biology in pursuit of becoming a veterinarian.

Wisconsin

Nathan ChoNathan Cho | Neenah High School | Neenah, Wisconsin

Coordinator: Sue Peterson

I'm Nathan Cho and I live in Neenah, Wisconsin. After high school, I plan on attending University-Missouri Kansas City; I don't know what I want to major in yet. There I plan on racking up some college debt while I figure out what to do with my life. I am yet another bumbling college kid. Jokes aside, I do plan on continuing my policy debate career at UMKC, both debating and coaching. I believe strongly in the value of debate as an extracurricular activity and I would not have won this essay contest if I didn't have the skills I learned in debate. This year I co-founded the Wisconsin Policy Debate Students Association and was elected Director of Resource Materials and Community Assistance. I plan on continuing my involvement in the debate community and promoting the project of improving debate, both within Wisconsin and around the country.

Wyoming

Walter ThulinWalter Thulin | Jackson Hole Community School | Jackson, Wyoming

Coordinator: Christian Burch

With a last name changed to Thulin (pronounced To-lean) from Anderson (a much more phonetically pleasing name), Walter has been forced to wait through four fifths of roll calls, with rare exceptions when roll is called backwards, in which moments of excitement momentarily enter and exit his existence. Other than obsessing over his spot at the end of roll calls, Walter invests his time in community service, tutoring several different elementary aged children in both math and English, as well as volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. He takes part in speech and debate, in which he consistently has done well across Wyoming, and swimming, where he is placed sixth at the "fifty freestyle." Attending Jackson Hole Community School as a sophomore, Walter invests his time in several classes which he is passionate about, including Mandarin, Spanish, and History, all of which he hopes to incorporate into his future.
