USIP Names National Winners of Peace Essay Contest
High school students from the District of Columbia, Minnesota, and Arizona took top honors in the 25th annual National Peace Essay Contest, sponsored by the United States Institute of Peace.
Experts from the U.S. Institute of Peace provide the latest analysis and perspective on the world’s critical hot spots, U.S. and global security and issues involved in violent conflict, based on the Institute’s work on the ground and with key individuals, governments and organizations. They give interviews and background briefings to journalists and write for news outlets around the world.

The PRIX JEUNESSE Foundation and the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) awarded “Salam Shabab”, an Iraqi youth media project supported by the U.S. Institute of Peace to teach Iraqi teens conflict management skills, with a Special Prize at the foundation’s biannual festival. One of eight prizes awarded, the UNESCO Special Prize recognizes youth television programming that promotes cultural understanding.
The U.S. Institute of Peace today announced the state-level winners of the National Peace Essay Contest (NPEC). Each of the 50 students received an academic scholarship for their essays on "The Impact of New Media on Peacebuilding and Conflict Management."
The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) announced today that it has partnered with the Future Generations Graduate School in developing an accredited Masters in Applied Community Change with a Concentration in Peacebuilding. The program was formally authorized on March 26th by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities.
A year after popular uprisings began to sweep several North African authoritarian regimes from power, the United States Institute of Peace is deeply engaged in efforts to manage conflict and promote peace in the region. Steven Riskin, a Middle East specialist at USIP, will lead a public conversation on developments in the Middle East and USIP’s work at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, at the University of South Carolina.
USIP has named Linda Jamison acting executive vice president for external affairs effective April 9. In this capacity Jamison will oversee outreach to other federal agencies, Congress, and nongovernmental organizations. In collaboration with the vice president for outreach, Jamison also will oversee the work of public affairs, publications, the Global Peacebuilding Center, and USIP’s events office.
The U.S. Senate yesterday evening confirmed USIP Executive Vice President Tara Sonenshine to be Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs. President Obama had nominated her to the post on November 4.
Jon Temin, director of Sudan programs at the U.S. Institute of Peace, testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee at this morning's hearing on "Sudan and South Sudan: Independence and Insecurity." Temin was joined on the hearing's second panel by George Clooney and John Prendergast with the Satellite Sentinel Project.
