Salam Shabab Earns UNESCO Special Prize at PRIX JEUNESSE
The PRIX JEUNESSE Foundation and the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) awarded “Salam Shabab”, an Iraqi youth media project supported by the U.S. Institute of Peace to teach Iraqi teens conflict management skills, with a Special Prize at the foundation’s biannual festival. One of eight prizes awarded, the UNESCO Special Prize recognizes youth television programming that promotes cultural understanding.
National Peace Essay Contest Winners Announced
The U.S. Institute of Peace today announced the state-level winners of the National Peace Essay Contest (NPEC). Each of the 50 students received an academic scholarship for their essays on "The Impact of New Media on Peacebuilding and Conflict Management."
USIP, Future Generations Graduate School Partner on Peacebuilding Masters Program
The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) announced today that it has partnered with the Future Generations Graduate School in developing an accredited Masters in Applied Community Change with a Concentration in Peacebuilding. The program was formally authorized on March 26th by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities.
Conflict Management and Peacebuilding in the Middle East
A year after popular uprisings began to sweep several North African authoritarian regimes from power, the United States Institute of Peace is deeply engaged in efforts to manage conflict and promote peace in the region. Steven Riskin, a Middle East specialist at USIP, will lead a public conversation on developments in the Middle East and USIP’s work at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, at the University of South Carolina.
USIP Names Acting Executive Vice President for External Affairs
USIP has named Linda Jamison acting executive vice president for external affairs effective April 9. In this capacity Jamison will oversee outreach to other federal agencies, Congress, and nongovernmental organizations. In collaboration with the vice president for outreach, Jamison also will oversee the work of public affairs, publications, the Global Peacebuilding Center, and USIP’s events office.
Senate Confirms Tara Sonenshine to be Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs
The U.S. Senate yesterday evening confirmed USIP Executive Vice President Tara Sonenshine to be Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs. President Obama had nominated her to the post on November 4.
USIP Expert Testifies Before Senate Foreign Relations Committee
Jon Temin, director of Sudan programs at the U.S. Institute of Peace, testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee at this morning's hearing on "Sudan and South Sudan: Independence and Insecurity." Temin was joined on the hearing's second panel by George Clooney and John Prendergast with the Satellite Sentinel Project.
USIP Welcomes Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
The United States Institute of Peace yesterday welcomed Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for her first official visit to the new permanent headquarters. Addressing a major gathering of U.S.-China experts, Clinton spoke to a packed audience including those who participated in the historic visit of President Richard Nixon to China 40 years ago.
