On May 17, 2010 USIP hosted one of Afghanistan's foremost politicians and diplomats, Abdullah Abdullah. A leading political advisor to Ahmad Shah Masood during the anti-Soviet jihad, and representative of the Northern Alliance during the Taliban era, Dr. Abdullah served as Afghanistan's Foreign Minister from 200-2006. In 2009, Dr. Abdullah ran a highly popular campaign for President of Afghanistan, qualifying for second round run-off election with President Karzai.

South Asia in the Age of Nuclear Weapons and Space Security

On the twelfth anniversary of the Indian nuclear tests of 1998, USIP organized an event to discuss a new book addressing nuclear weapons, missile defense, and space security in South Asia. "South Asia at a Crossroads: Conflict or Cooperation in the Age of Nuclear Weapons, Missile Defense, and Space Rivalries" is an edited volume which introduces these topics to a broader audience with the hope that they will become a part of the public discourse in the future.
