(Washington) - The United States Institute of Peace joins the nation in mourning the passing of Robert Sargent Shriver whose 1961 efforts led to the founding of the Peace Corps. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Shriver and Kennedy families and especially with our Board member, Kerry Kennedy” said Richard H. Solomon, president of USIP. The Institute will be co-hosting an event with the Peace Corps on September 23, 2011 in celebration of its 50th anniversary, and as part of USIP’s week of activities around the public opening of the new headquarters.
