News Release announcing the start of the 19th class of Senior Fellows at the Institute.

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Institute of Peace is pleased to announce the selection of its 19th class of Senior Fellows in the Jennings Randolph Fellowship Program. Named in honor of former U.S. Senator Jennings Randolph of West Virginia, a founder of the Institute, the program affords leading policy practitioners and researchers opportunities to examine non-violent approaches to the resolution of international conflict and postconflict stabilization.

In welcoming the new group, most of whom will be in residence at the Institute from October through July 2006, Fellowship Program Director Sheryl Brown said, "The 2005 - 2006 slate provides a good example of the Institute's ability to attract both practitioners and theorists who are applying the most innovative approaches to preventing and resolving the age-old scourge of war. This year's class of fellows includes several candidates who will add to the Institute's already well-recognized capacity to support postconflict rule of law implementation as well as peace operations in general. Another continuing focus will be on emergent threats of generational, or cyclical, violence often embodied in the children of war or child soldiers. We are looking forward to another good year of edifying and constructive work."

In addition to undertaking their special projects, fellows participate in the Institute's public outreach efforts by briefing the media, Congress, policymakers, and the public on international issues. Dr. Brown said, "More than 200 Senior Fellows over the course of 18 years represent an extraordinary virtual, as well as actual, resource for the Institute's ongoing work. Alumni from the Fellowship Program continue to contribute as they become part of the Institute's global network to resolve international conflicts worldwide." Books and reports resulting from fellowships are published by the U.S. Institute of Peace Press and are available both in print and on the Institute's Web site.

Senior Fellows are selected by the Institute's board of directors following an international competition. The annual submission for the Senior Fellow Program is September 15. Winners are chosen the following April.
