(Washington, Feb 2) — A book funded in part by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Peace has won the 2007 International Studies Association Best Book Award. The Marketing of Rebellion, by Clifford Bob, has also been named a Top Book of 2006 by The Globalist online magazine.
The Marketing of Rebellion examines the clamorous efforts of armed and unarmed movements around the world seeking to elicit the attention of international media, NGOs, and donors. Clifford Bob examines why a handful of such movements become global causes célèbres, while scores of others remain isolated and obscure.
"The book raises awkward questions about the perils and promise of international recognition," says Judy Barsalou, vice president for the Institute’s Grants and Fellowship program. "In doing so, it complicates and enriches our understanding of the institutions that take on, if only by default, the role of conscience in a globalizing world." Barsalou added, "The Institute provided grant funding for this project because it posed new and interesting questions in a compelling way."
