(Washington) -- The staff and board of directors at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) wish our colleague, Ambassador Frank Ricciardone, much success in his new upcoming mission as Deputy Ambassador at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. While at USIP, Ricciardone had been on leave from the U.S. Department of State, and will soon report to his new post. Ricciardone joined the Foreign Service in 1978 and has served as Ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Republics of the Philippines and Palau. He has extensive experience throughout both Asia and the Middle East, including service in Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Jordan. USIP president Richard H. Solomon said, "In the few months Frank was at USIP it's appropriate to say that he was an Ambassador for the Institute - he spoke to a dizzying array of students, journalists, academics and other groups both in Washington and around the country about his work prior to and at USIP. We will miss his collegiality as much as his insight and intellectual contributions to our work. However, in the true spirit of public service, Frank's talents and expertise could not be put to more urgent and important use than at our nation's embassy in Kabul."
