In an attempt to support statebuilding and capacity development efforts, USIP is providing analysis and on-the-ground support in an effort to develop the young country's capacity to function as a reliable government to its citizens and as a credible member of the international community.
Statebuilding Reports: These reports begin to address some of the central challenges to statebuilding in South Sudan, including oil revenues and economic development, ethnicity and nationbuilding, dowry and youth issues, and gender issues.
First Anniversary of the Independence of South Sudan: To mark its first year as a nation, USIP compiled a range of resources examining the new country's first year and for beginning to discuss its trajectory in the coming years.
Police-Community Dialogues: Tensions remain between members of civil society organizations and the police stemming from confrontational approaches that both sides have adopted during the transition to democracy. USIP aims to build trust between these two groups.
South Sudan Policy Institute: USIP is providing start-up funding and advisory support for the Sudd Institute, a new, independent policy research organization based in the South Sudanese capital of Juba.

In advance of the upcoming International Engagement Conference for South Sudan, USIP is hosting an event to highlight "Getting it Right from the Start: Priorities for Action in the New Republic of South Sudan," a recent report from a consortium of international nongovernmental organizations active in South Sudan. Following the presentation of the report, experts including a representative from the Government of South Sudan will discuss the recommendations and the way forward on critical peace and development issues.
